A suspension, within the context of laboratory testing, refers to a mixture in which two or more unlike substances are combined but do not lose their individual properties. Because different substances are combined in a suspension, it is called a heterogeneous mixture. While the substances may appear to combine when mixed, over time they will separate or settle out.

When particles added to another substance do not dissolve, the resulting mix is called a suspension. For example, if sand and water are combined in a container the sand will eventually fall to the bottom, separating from the water. When referencing chemistry or lab testing, a suspension is most often formed by combining a liquid with a particulate. However, a suspension may also be a combination of a solid and a gas or of two liquids. Dust particles floating in the air are a type of suspension. Oil and water also form a suspension when combined. When a suspension mixture is made, the substances combined in the mix remain physically separate.
