What Does Date of Birth (DOB) Mean?

An individual’s date of birth is the date upon which they were born. A person’s date of birth will include the day, month and year upon which the person was born. A date of birth may also be referred to as a birth date.

A person’s date of birth is often used to assist in identifying and distinguishing that individual from other persons with the same name. For record keeping purposes, a date of birth may be recorded to identify or confirm the individual’s age in order to meet employment and safety regulations or guidelines. An individual’s date of birth is considered to be personally identifiable information and, as such, must be safeguarded in compliance with federal and state privacy laws.
