What Does Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) Mean?

A physical demands analysis (PDA) is an evaluation conducted to determine the physical requirements of a specific job or job category. The analysis focuses on the physical motions and positions that are required in order to perform the job’s tasks. Actions such as lifting, running, sitting, and standing could be a part of a job’s physical demand profile. The results of this analysis are then used to determine a particular employee’s suitability to perform the jobs in the analyzed category. The PDA can also identify tasks that may increase the risk of harm to employees.

Physical demands analysis may also be referred to as a physical demand profile (PDP), work demand profile, or work demand analysis.

Ideally, a physical demands analysis will quantify all of the physical and environmental requirements of a job. Specific evaluations and procedures are performed in order to identify every component of the job, identifying both essential and non-essential tasks. This information can then be used to determine whether a prospective employee is capable of meeting the demands of the job.

More importantly, the physical demand profile may be used to evaluate whether an injured worker may safely return to a job with physical demands. The PDA may also assist an employer in matching a recovering employee with a job that is suitable for the employee’s current physical condition. Finally, a physical demands analysis can assist an employer in identifying problematic workplace conditions in order to reduce injuries and improve overall job quality.
