Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) is a medical coding system used to identify medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures. These codes are used to facilitate electronic medical billing and for data collection and tracking. By using a uniform system, medical providers, insurers, and hospitals can streamline communications and information processing and reduce communication errors, therefore increasing quality of care.
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) is the American Medical Association (AMA) trademarked medical coding system used to identify medical procedures in the United States. Created and updated annually by the AMA’s CPT Editorial Panel, the CPT classifies procedures using three categories. Most common medical procedures are included in Category I. Category II codes are optional supplemental codes used to measure performance. Category III codes are reserved for new technologies and developmental procedures.
